Mijas is a sprawling municipality running from the mountains to the sea, between Fuengirola and Marbella. At the top is Mijas Pueblo, a white mountain village with narrow lanes, views across the coast and its famous donkey taxis. Down by the sea is Mijas Costa, with La Cala, Calahonda and Riviera del Sol, and in between a green valley full of golf courses and villa neighbourhoods. It is one of the most international municipalities in Spain, with large British, Scandinavian and Dutch-speaking communities.
The areas of Mijas
In the west are Calahonda, Riviera del Sol, Miraflores and Calypso: large urbanisations with apartments, townhouses and villas, often with sea views, fifteen minutes from Marbella. La Cala de Mijas is the friendly seaside village with a promenade and coastal boardwalk, flanked by Torrenueva, El Faro and El Chaparral. Inland is the golf valley with La Cala Golf, La Cala Hills, Mijas Golf, Calanova Golf, Cerros del Águila, Valtocado and Campo Mijas, where you get more space and larger plots. Around the village are Mijas Pueblo, Las Lagunas, the practical, very Spanish residential district next to Fuengirola, and Sierrezuela.
Prices
According to idealista, the average asking price in Mijas was €3,717 per m² in September 2026, 8.5% higher than a year earlier. Half a million buys on average around 135 square metres, far more than in Marbella. By the sea in La Cala de Mijas the average is higher, at around €4,613 per m², while in Campo Mijas and the golf valley you get considerably more space for the same money. Sea-view villas on the hills above Calahonda and La Cala are the top segment.
Beaches, golf and schools
The sandy beaches of La Cala, Calahonda and Riviera del Sol are wide and well equipped, and the wooden boardwalk at La Cala is perfect for a morning stroll. With thirteen golf courses, Mijas is, after Marbella, one of Spain's golf capitals: La Cala Resort with three courses, Mijas Golf, Miraflores and Calanova Golf, to name a few. For international schooling, families mainly look at St Anthony's College on the Fuengirola side and the schools in Fuengirola and Benalmádena, ten to twenty minutes away.
Getting around
Málaga airport is about half an hour away, a little more from Calahonda and a little less from Las Lagunas. The commuter train to Málaga and the airport leaves from neighbouring Fuengirola. Marbella is fifteen to twenty minutes away. Distances within the municipality are large, so a car is essential almost everywhere. For hospitals, large shopping centres and nightlife, Fuengirola and Marbella are close at hand.
New build or resale, and who is it for?
Mijas has a large supply of resale homes in the older urbanisations of Calahonda and Riviera del Sol, often with generous terraces and at reasonable prices. New builds are concentrated in the golf valley around La Cala and in the hills with sea views. Mijas suits golfers, retirees, winter-sun seekers and families who want to live close to the airport with plenty of space for their budget. If you want to do everything on foot, Fuengirola is the better choice.
