Torrenueva sits on the headland between Miraflores and La Cala de Mijas, where the coast road bends around the point. The name comes from the Torre Nueva, a watchtower on a rise close to the beach. Most historians date it to 1568. The tower is a truncated cone almost eleven metres high, stands in the middle of a residential estate and has been a protected monument since 1985. It belongs to the chain of towers that once guarded the coast against pirates.
Today it is a quiet residential spot with La Cala village as its natural centre. You live just outside the bustle, yet the boardwalk lets you walk along the sea to the village terraces, market and beach.
