Who is it for?

Is Calahonda right for you?

Ideal if you

  • want an affordable sea-view apartment close to Marbella
  • like living in an international community where English is the common language
  • want long beach walks, with chiringuitos open in winter too
  • are looking for a home that is easy to let

Less suitable if you

  • want an authentic Spanish village (look at Mijas Pueblo or La Cala)
  • want to walk everywhere: the urbanisation is large and hilly
  • mainly want new build: Calahonda is built up and new projects are rare (look at Calanova Golf)

Living in Calahonda

Calahonda is the historic name for the coast between Mijas and Marbella. In 1963 José de Orbaneja bought two estates here and began Sitio de Calahonda, a planned residential area of around 280 hectares. The developers capped buildings at five storeys even though more was allowed. You still see it today: plenty of greenery, low-rise buildings and dozens of smaller complexes that together form one large urbanisation.

Residents are strongly international, with many British, Scandinavian, German and French owners. Its own management body, the EUC Sitio de Calahonda, looks after the streets and green spaces. The last building plots of the original estate were sold in 2002, so what you buy here is almost always a resale home.

What you can buy here

Apartments and penthouses make up most of the market, often in complexes with gardens and a shared pool. There are also townhouses and, mainly higher up the hills, detached villas with sea views. Idealista recorded an average asking price of €3,706 per m² for Sitio de Calahonda in September 2026, 4.0% more than a year earlier. That is close to the Mijas average and well below neighbouring Marbella East.

Beach, golf and amenities

Calahonda beach is more than four and a half kilometres long and runs west as far as the Cabopino marina. A watchtower from 1575 stands on the headland. Inside the urbanisation is La Siesta, a nine-hole course, and the big courses of the golf valley are a short drive away. Supermarkets, pharmacies, restaurants and a few small shopping centres are all within the area itself. Hospital Costa del Sol in Marbella is under fifteen minutes away, and the English International College in Marbella East is one of the nearest international schools.

Things to watch

Calahonda is so large that the position within it makes all the difference: close to the beach, or high on the hill with views but steep streets. Older complexes may need renovation. The upper edges border wooded hills, where wildfires broke out in 2011 and 2012, so ask about fire prevention and insurance.
