Living in Valtocado
Valtocado is a rural settlement on the southern slope of the Sierra de Mijas, a few kilometres from Mijas Pueblo. Together with La Alquería, the area had around 1,600 residents in 2019. It is not a gated urbanisation but a scattered residential setting of villas and small clusters of homes among pines, rocks and olive terraces.
Thanks to the altitude, many plots look out over the mountains, the countryside and the Mediterranean. It is noticeably quieter and greener than on the coast.
What you can buy here
Supply is almost entirely detached villas, often in Andalusian style, with a pool and a generous garden, plus the occasional contemporary new-build villa. Idealista recorded an average asking price of €3,878 per m² for the Valtocado, La Alquería and La Atalaya zone in September 2026, 7.9% more than a year earlier and slightly above the Mijas average.
Daily life
For bread, a pharmacy or a terrace you drive five to ten minutes to Mijas Pueblo. For big shops, the beach and the train to Málaga you head to Fuengirola, about fifteen to twenty minutes. Golfers have Alhaurín Golf a short drive away, and St Anthony's College lies between Mijas and Fuengirola. Marbella and the airport are each about 25 to 35 minutes away.
Things to watch
With any villa, check the planning status and whether the pool, outbuildings and extensions are licensed: part of the area is classed as rural land. Ask about water supply, waste water and internet connection. In summer fire prevention matters, with a cleared zone around the house. And count on a car for everything. At this altitude winter evenings are cooler than on the coast, so good heating and insulation are no luxury.
