Who is it for?

Is La Cala right for you?

Ideal if you

  • want to do everything on foot: beach, market, restaurants and bakery are close together
  • are moving with children and want a village that stays alive out of season
  • play golf: La Cala Resort and Calanova are a few minutes' drive away
  • like walking or running by the sea, along the boardwalk towards Calahonda

Less suitable if you

  • are looking for the lowest entry prices in Mijas (look at Las Lagunas or Riviera del Sol)
  • want complete peace in July and August, when the centre gets busy
  • want glamour and marinas (look at Puerto Banús or Marbella Centrum)

Living in La Cala de Mijas

La Cala is the seaside village of the municipality of Mijas and the liveliest spot on Mijas Costa. It started life as a fishing village and has kept that small-scale feel: a pedestrian area with terraces, a church square, local shops and a beach of almost two kilometres right next to the centre.

On the beach stands the Torreón, a sixteenth-century watchtower that is now a visitor centre. On Wednesday and Saturday mornings there is a market at the fairground, with vegetables, olives and clothing. From here the wooden boardwalk runs past the beaches of El Bombo and Butibamba towards Calahonda.

What you can buy here

In and around the centre you mainly buy apartments, from simple flats in older buildings to penthouses with sea views in recent complexes. On the hills behind lie townhouses and villas, often in small gated developments. Further inland, towards La Cala Golf and Calanova, you find much of the recent new build.

La Cala is the most expensive part of Mijas. Idealista gave an average asking price of €4,613 per m² in September 2026, 8.9% more than a year earlier and well above the municipal average of €3,717.

Daily life, golf and schools

Because many people live here all year, shops, sports clubs and restaurants stay open in winter. Ten minutes or so inland lies La Cala Resort with three 18-hole courses, a hotel and a golf academy, and Calanova Golf is even closer. For international schooling families usually drive towards Fuengirola, home to St Anthony's College, or to Marbella East. Fuengirola and Marbella are each about fifteen to twenty minutes away.

Things to watch

Parking in the centre is difficult in summer, so a private space is worth its weight in gold. Frontline apartments are scarce and expensive, while a few hundred metres inland often gives you more space for the same budget. If you plan to let to holidaymakers, check the licence and community rules before buying. And if you buy high on the hills for the views, you will need a car for almost everything: the slopes are steep and the centre is no longer within walking distance.
