Who is it for?
Is Mijas Costa right for you?
Ideal if you
- want to live by the sea without paying Marbella prices
- fly back and forth often: the airport is about half an hour away
- play golf: Mijas has one of the largest concentrations of courses in Spain
- like an international setting where English is spoken almost everywhere
Less suitable if you
- want city culture and nightlife within walking distance (look at Fuengirola or Málaga instead)
- want to live without a car: the urbanisations are spread out along the coast road
- want the prestige and big names of the Golden Mile (look at The Golden Mile or Sierra Blanca)
Living in Mijas Costa
Mijas Costa is not a village but a stretch of coast. It is the umbrella name for everything the municipality of Mijas owns by the sea: roughly twelve kilometres between Fuengirola and the Marbella boundary. Coming from Marbella you pass Sitio de Calahonda first, then Calypso, Riviera del Sol and Miraflores, round the headland at Torrenueva and arrive in La Cala de Mijas, the lively heart of the coast. Further towards Fuengirola lie El Chaparral and El Faro, by the Calaburras lighthouse.
Behind the coast the land rises quickly towards the Sierra de Mijas. That is where the golf valley lies, with La Cala Resort, Calanova and Mijas Golf among others. The municipality had just over 95,000 residents at the start of 2025, a large share of them foreign. You hear English everywhere, but also Scandinavian languages, Dutch and French.
What you can buy here
The choice is wide. Along the coast, apartments and penthouses in complexes with a shared pool and gardens dominate, many built between the 1970s and today. On the slopes above you find townhouses and detached villas with sea views. In the golf valley more and more new developments are appearing, often clean and contemporary, with large terraces.
According to idealista, the average asking price in Mijas in September 2026 was €3,717 per m², up 8.5% on a year earlier. That is clearly below Marbella, but the differences along the coast are large: La Cala de Mijas stood at €4,613 per m², Riviera del Sol at €3,481.
Daily life, beaches and golf
The beaches are wide and sandy, with chiringuitos that stay open in winter too. A wooden coastal boardwalk links large parts of the shore, perfect for walking or running. Every centre has enough shops, doctors and restaurants for daily life; for bigger shopping trips you drive to Fuengirola or Marbella. International schools are mainly towards Fuengirola, such as St Anthony's College, and in Marbella East.
Things to watch
The A-7 runs close to the shore. An apartment right next to the road can be noisy, so look carefully at position and orientation. Older complexes from the 1970s and 1980s sometimes need renovation; ask about planned works and community fees. If you want to let to holidaymakers, you need an Andalusian licence and the rules are getting stricter, so have this checked before you buy.
