Living in Atalaya

Atalaya, often mentioned together with Isdabe, is the easternmost part of Estepona. It runs from Avenida Hacienda del Sol to the Guadalmina river, where Marbella begins. The area grew around the Atalaya Park Hotel, opened in 1966 and reopened in 2018 after a major refurbishment as Sol Marbella Estepona Atalaya Park. Nueva Atalaya and the golf courses lie on the mountain side of the A-7, with beach complexes and hotels on the sea side.

People choose Atalaya for practical comfort: Guadalmina, San Pedro and Puerto Banús are around the corner, but you pay less than across the river. The mix is very international, with plenty of northern Europeans and Britons alongside Spanish families.

Golf, beach and sport

Atalaya Golf & Country Club has two 18-hole courses. The Old Course was laid out in 1968 by German architect Bernhard von Limburger and is a tree-lined classic. El Paraíso Golf is right next door. Atalaya’s own beach is narrow, with coarse sand and plenty of rocks: great for snorkelling, less so for toddlers. For sport there is Alhambra Padel Club with six outdoor courts, plus a football academy for young players.

Marriott’s Playa Andaluza and Hotel Globales Playa Estepona also sit on the seafront. The gardens of the latter hold the Torre de Baños, the easternmost of Estepona’s old watchtowers, with origins in the 13th century. A nice piece of history within walking distance, and when family visits there is always a hotel round the corner.

You'll mainly find apartments and penthouses in gated complexes, such as Alhambra del Golf near the Guadalmina, and the modern Hacienda del Sol with swimming pools, padel and 24-hour security. There are also townhouses and, higher up the hill, spacious villas.

Daily life and things to check

The Isdabe del Sol shopping centre on the sea side has an Aldi, cafés and restaurants, with a bus stop towards Marbella nearby. Málaga airport is roughly an hour’s drive. When choosing, weigh the distance to the A-7: it affects the price, but also the peace and quiet. If you plan to rent out, check whether the complex allows holiday lets, as Andalusia requires a licence.
