Living in El Paraíso
El Paraíso is one of the oldest residential golf communities on the New Golden Mile. It lies on the mountain side of the A-7, between Estepona and Benahavís, and a large part actually falls within the municipality of Benahavís. People usually speak of three parts: Paraíso Bajo near the coast and the shops, Paraíso Medio around the golf course, and Paraíso Alto higher up the hill, with wide views over the sea to Gibraltar and Africa on clear days.
The feel is green and quiet, with wide avenues, bougainvillea hedges and villas on generous plots. Residents include retired golfers, Scandinavian and British families and a growing number of young entrepreneurs working from home.
Golf and schools
The heart of the area is El Paraíso Golf Club, an 18-hole Gary Player design in play since the early 1970s. It is walkable and has a friendly clubhouse. Atalaya Golf & Country Club, with two 18-hole courses, and Los Flamingos are a few minutes’ drive away. For families, The International School Estepona matters: a British school for children aged 2 to 12 in Pelikan Park, on the border of El Paraíso and Bel Air.
What homes you will find
The villa rules here, from 1980s Andalusian cortijo style to sleek renovated homes with large glazing. There are also townhouses and apartments in small complexes around the golf course, such as Pueblo Cortés. New build is scarcer than elsewhere on the New Golden Mile, although modern villas are appearing on cleared plots.
If you buy an older villa, always have a building survey done and check that extensions, pool and pool house are legally registered. Also check whether the property falls under Estepona or Benahavís, as that determines local taxes and permits.
Daily life
At the bottom of the area, along the A-7, you will find supermarkets, restaurants and services, with Mercadona and Lidl in Bel Air among others. The beaches of El Saladillo and the New Golden Mile are a few minutes’ drive. Puerto Banús and Estepona town are both about a quarter of an hour away, and Málaga airport just over an hour. The luxury Anantara Villa Padierna hotel sits just above the area, in Benahavís.
