Marbella has been known since the 1950s as the playground of the international jet set. It was then that Prince Alfonso von Hohenlohe opened the Marbella Club, and ever since the town has attracted entrepreneurs, sports stars, artists and wealthy families from all over the world. But where exactly do the wealthy live in Marbella today? In this guide we take you through the ten most exclusive neighbourhoods, with current prices, the character of each area and who each one suits best.
Short answer: Marbella's wealthiest residents mainly live on and around the Golden Mile (Nagüeles, Sierra Blanca, Las Lomas del Marbella Club), on the private estate of La Zagaleta in Benahavís, in Los Monteros east of the town centre and in the golf valley of Nueva Andalucía (Los Naranjos, Aloha). Villas there often cost between €3 million and more than €20 million.

1. The Golden Mile: the heart of luxury living
The Golden Mile, Milla de Oro in Spanish, is the stretch of roughly six kilometres between Marbella town centre and Puerto Banús. This is home to iconic addresses such as the Marbella Club Hotel, Puente Romano, the Royal Palace of the Saudi royal family and some of the most expensive villas on the Costa del Sol. The seaward side, with villas running right down to the beach, is the most sought after. Living here, you can walk to beach clubs, Michelin-starred restaurants and the town centre.
The downside? July and August are busy, and prices are the highest in the whole town. But if you are looking for that combination of sea, buzz and prestige, the Golden Mile is still the number one address.
2. Sierra Blanca: privacy beneath La Concha
Just above the Golden Mile, at the foot of the famous La Concha mountain, lies Sierra Blanca. It is one of Marbella's oldest gated villa communities, with 24-hour security, barriers and generous plots. Many villas enjoy panoramic views of the sea and Africa. The town centre and Puerto Banús are a ten-minute drive away. Sierra Blanca mainly attracts families who value privacy and security but still want to live close to everything.
3. Nagüeles and Las Lomas del Marbella Club
Nagüeles climbs the hillside between the Golden Mile and the mountains. Leafy streets, peace and quiet and large villas set the tone. Las Lomas del Marbella Club, close to Puente Romano and the Marbella Club Hotel, combines villas with luxury townhouses in small gated complexes. It is ideal if you want to live within walking distance of the Golden Mile while keeping a little more distance from the bustle.
4. La Zagaleta: Europe's most exclusive estate
La Zagaleta, in the hills of Benahavís, is often described as the most exclusive private estate in southern Europe. Covering around 900 hectares, it has two private golf courses, an equestrian centre, its own clubhouse and strict access control. The villas stand on plots that often exceed one hectare and are offered from several million to over €30 million. It is home to business people, sports stars and families seeking maximum peace and discretion. Marbella and Puerto Banús are around twenty minutes away by car.
5. Los Monteros: beachfront villas
East of the town centre lies Los Monteros, home to the five-star Los Monteros Spa & Golf Resort and one of Marbella's finest wide sandy beaches. The area feels more residential and quieter than the Golden Mile. With an average asking price of almost €8,700 per m², it is one of the most expensive places in Marbella. The difference between beachfront villas and those further inland is considerable.
6. Puerto Banús: the jet set's marina
Puerto Banús is Spain's best-known marina, with superyachts, designer boutiques and restaurants along the quayside. The homes around the port are mainly luxury apartments and penthouses. Ideal as a second home or for anyone who loves a lively atmosphere. If you prefer peace and quiet, the villa areas behind the port, such as Nueva Andalucía, are a better choice.
7. Nueva Andalucía, Los Naranjos and Aloha: the Golf Valley
Behind Puerto Banús lies Nueva Andalucía, also known as the Golf Valley, with courses such as Los Naranjos, Las Brisas and Aloha. Many international families live here, as international schools such as Aloha College are just around the corner. Los Naranjos and Las Brisas are the most exclusive parts, with large villas overlooking the greens and the mountains. Compared with the Golden Mile, your budget buys you more space here.
8. Guadalmina Baja: old money by the sea
In San Pedro de Alcántara, on the western side of Marbella, lies Guadalmina Baja: a quiet villa area between the sea and the Guadalmina golf course. It is one of Marbella's oldest residential areas, much loved by families who have been coming to the Costa del Sol for generations. Green, discreet and with villas running right down to the beach.
9. El Madroñal and Monte Mayor (Benahavís)
Higher up in the mountains of Benahavís you will find El Madroñal and Monte Mayor. Large plots, unspoilt nature, views as far as Gibraltar and Africa, and a tranquillity you won't find on the coast. A good alternative to La Zagaleta, often with more space for the same budget.
10. The New Golden Mile between San Pedro and Estepona
More and more affluent buyers are finding their way to the New Golden Mile, between San Pedro de Alcántara and Estepona. With new developments on the beach, golf courses such as El Paraíso and Los Flamingos and the Kempinski Hotel, this is an up-and-coming luxury area where your money still goes further.
