Montemar lies on the western side of Torremolinos, towards Benalmádena, on the hill above La Carihuela. It is greener and more residential than the centre, with wider avenues, gardens and more space between buildings. The district holds a special place in the history of Costa del Sol tourism: in 1934 the Italian-born Carlota Alessandri bought the Cucazorra farmhouse here and turned it into a small seven-room hostel, El Parador de Montemar. The area's main avenue bears her name today.
Alessandri left her mark beyond tourism too: she helped found the Carmelitas de Montemar and donated land for a church, an old people's home, a kindergarten and a school. That blend of homes and neighbourhood facilities still shapes Montemar's character.
Daily life
Your neighbours are Spanish families, people from Málaga and international residents who stay all year. Montemar Alto station is on the C-1, so you can reach the airport or central Málaga without a car. At the foot of the hill are La Carihuela with its fish restaurants, the promenade and Parque de la Batería. Supermarkets and everyday services line Avenida Carlota Alessandri and the nearby centre. Sunny View School, the British school of Torremolinos, is a short drive away.
