Living in Los Monteros
Los Monteros lies on the seaward side of the A-7, just east of Río Real. This is where luxury tourism in East Marbella began in 1962, when the Los Monteros hotel opened, the first hotel in Spain to earn a Michelin star. In 1970 came La Reserva de los Monteros, a villa estate that remains one of the most sought-after addresses on the coast.
The streets are green and quiet. Spacious villas sit on large plots among pines and tropical gardens, some in classic Andalusian style, others fully renovated or rebuilt with clean modern lines. Apartments are the exception rather than the rule. Residents are a mix of international families and Spanish families who have been coming for generations.
Beach, hotel and beach clubs
The hotel was thoroughly renovated and reopened in February 2025 as Kimpton Los Monteros Marbella, with 195 rooms. It stands about 400 metres from the sea. Below the estate lies the wide Los Monteros beach with its beach bars, home also to La Cabane, one of the best-known beach clubs on the coast.
Daily life
Marbella town is five to ten minutes' drive away, Puerto Banús about fifteen. For groceries you drive to El Rosario or into Marbella. Hospital Costa del Sol is just across the A-7, which reassures many families and retirees. The English International College and Colegio Alborán are about ten minutes away.
Golfers are well served. Santa Clara Golf lies directly opposite the hotel on the inland side, Río Real is just to the west and Marbella Golf a little further inland. The latter is set to become a golf resort with Spain's first Waldorf Astoria hotel, with opening planned for 2029. If you prefer exercise without clubs, walk along the beach towards Río Real and pick up the coastal path into town.
What to check when buying
