Living in La Mairena
La Mairena sits in the hills above Elviria, about five kilometres inland and at around 400 metres. The urbanisation was started in the late 1980s and straddles two municipalities, part in Ojén and part in Marbella. You live among pines, Mediterranean scrub and quiet streets, with views stretching across the coast from many spots.
Homes range from detached villas on generous plots to semi-detached houses, townhouses and smaller apartment complexes. On the remaining plots, contemporary villas with large glazing aimed at the view keep appearing. Residents are mainly families and couples from Germany, Scandinavia, the Benelux, the UK and Spain, many living here full time.
Schools, sport and nature
For many families the Deutsche Schule Málaga is the reason to live here, as the school is in La Mairena itself. English International College in Elviria is a short drive away. There is a tennis academy with several courts, and walking and mountain-bike trails lead into the hills towards the Sierra de las Nieves. Golfers drive a few minutes to Santa María Golf and Greenlife in Elviria or to La Cala Resort in Mijas.
Daily life
La Mairena itself has a small supermarket and a few restaurants and cafés. For a big shop you drive about ten minutes down to Elviria, which is also where the beaches are. Marbella town centre is about twenty minutes away and Málaga airport about fifty. Thanks to the altitude, summer evenings are often a little cooler than on the coast. Many residents see that as the big advantage: you sleep better on hot nights, yet the coast is never far away.
What to check
Check which municipality the home is in, Ojén or Marbella, as that decides which town hall handles licences and local taxes. Orientation is crucial: a south-facing villa with open views is worth more than a home on a north slope. Also have the access road, retaining walls and the licences for pool and extensions checked. As in any green hillside area, fire prevention around the garden, such as clearing dry brush, is simply part of good upkeep.
