Living in Puerto Banús
Puerto Banús was opened in 1970 by developer José Banús. It was the first marina on the Costa del Sol and the first in Spain built entirely with private capital. The harbour village, with its white Andalusian-style facades, was designed by Pierre Canto. More than half a century on, it is one of the best-known addresses in Europe.
Homes here are mainly apartments and penthouses: around the marina, in frontline beach complexes and in developments just behind the coast road. There are hardly any villas; for those you look at Nueva Andalucía, which starts right behind the port. Buyers are international and often want a second home they can lock up without worry.
Life by the marina
The quays are lined with luxury boutiques, restaurants and bars, while the streets behind hold a large El Corte Inglés and plenty of supermarkets. Sandy beaches with beach clubs stretch out on both sides of the marina. By day it is a place to stroll; in the evening and at night the nightlife is in full swing, especially from June to September.
What many people do not realise: outside high season Puerto Banús is surprisingly calm and liveable. People live here all year, the restaurants stay open and the Nueva Andalucía golf courses are five minutes' drive away.
Practically, too, the location is strong. San Pedro de Alcántara is about ten minutes away, Marbella town centre around fifteen and Málaga airport roughly an hour. Families who still want to live here have Aloha College a few minutes' drive away. And if you like to keep active, you can walk or run along the sea westwards past Cortijo Blanco, or east towards the Golden Mile.
What to watch when buying
The exact location is everything. An apartment above a bar on the quay is a different proposition in July from a beachside complex with a quiet garden. Ask about noise, parking and community fees, which run higher in complexes with security and gardening. A berth in the marina does not automatically come with a home and is rented or bought separately.
If you plan holiday lets, have it checked beforehand whether a tourist licence is possible: Andalusian rules are tightening and some communities ban it. We look into this for you before you make an offer.
